During their visit, my mom had casually mentioned that the tropical storm Sandy had been upgraded to hurricane status, but we hadn't discussed the storm when we'd said our goodbyes. Leighty journey to the World War II Normandy battlefield later this summer.Valenti and Leighty were one team of 15 selected in a nationwide competition sponsored by the National History Day organization. This is the fifth year the Maryland-based group has sent student/teacher teams to Normandy to study World War II and the Normandy invasion. They will be the first student/teacher team from Dover High to make the trip.Although Leighty had submitted their names for the competition, both teacher and student were shocked upon learning in January they had been selected and soon would be traveling to Europe, the first time either has visited that continent. I was like, really? Leighty said upon receiving the congratulatory phone call. I figured there were two other guys out there nerdier than us who were better qualified. Spencer said his mother s excited reaction almost drowned out his conversation when Leighty called him with the good news. I still can t believe it, he said.Nominating Spencer for the competition was an easy task, Leighty said. I wanted someone who was truly interested in the subject matter, someone who would appreciate it and get something out of it, he said. The National History Day group is sponsoring the two week trip, which will begin June 20, free of charge. All we have to pay for are our passports and our drive to Washington, D.C., Leighty said. But it won t be just a sightseeing trip: there is some serious work involved before anyone starts packing their suitcases. Between now and June, both Spencer and Leighty must complete a program of study that involves weekly reading assignments and interactive online question and answer sessions.Operation OverlordAmerican, British and other Allied forces launched an invasion, dubbed Operation Overlord, across the English Channel on June 6, 1944, intending to roll back Adolf Hitler s armies and defeat the Nazi war machine. They succeeded 11 months later. As part of a detailed study of Operation Overlord, Spencer will examine the various aspects that went into planning and carrying out the invasion, including the operational and even political influences on how the plan was carried out.In addition, Spencer will research the life of a Delaware soldier, Pvt. William Verderamo, of Wilmington. Verderamo, 29, was killed on the first day of the invasion, and is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery. From census records, Spencer and Leighty have learned Verderamo was living with a large number of relatives in 1940. One was a nephew, Francis C. Sarro Jr., who reportedly still lives in Wilmington.Page 2 of 2 - Although they have learned Verderamo served in prior campaigns, earning a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, they have little additional information on him. Further research will, hopefully turn up photographs and more details on his life, Spencer said.Footsteps of historyAfter spending four days in Washington, D.C., studying and touring the city s World War II memorials, Spencer and Leighty will continue their work in France. There they will tour the battlefields and, just before Independence Day, Spencer will deliver a eulogy for Verderamo and lay a wreath at his gravesite. By the time they travel to France, they have formed a personal connection that allows them to better understand the sacrifices that people made for their country and our personal freedoms, NHD Executive Director Cathy Gorn noted in a press release announcing Spencer and Leighty s selection.Spencer expects the trip to be a defining moment in his life and in his understanding of World War II. You can only learn so much in the classroom, he said. Most people think it stops there, but there s so much more. I ll be able to walk in the footsteps of history.
Great, the City getting involved in the operations of business again. According to code enforcement, the neon OPEN signs are not allowed, but the bright, flashy, LED ones are. Go figure. At a cost of $200.00 or more, I'm sure this is just what all business owners wanted to impact their budgets! There should be some sort of grandfather clause for existing signs that meet the building ordinances, which apparently aren't being reviewed or looked at. It's not like Hollister has a waiting list for business's to open up here, and if there are signs that have no inspection or permit, go deal with those specifically, and stop with the blanket punishment of everyone in business here. http://www.poloralphlaurenmen.name/ - ralph lauren outlet This acquisition will solidify HSA Bank's position as a leading provider of health savings accounts, with nearly $4 billion in assets under administration in more than 1.4 million accounts, and will accelerate HSA Bank's strategy to increase penetration of the carrier and large employer markets, James C. HSAs attract long-duration transaction deposits, which provide a stable source of funding for Webster's loan growth.

Arkansans in 2015 are extraordinarily lucky to be represented on the national stage by Pallbearer, the deservedly celebrated doom metal proponents and psychedelic voyagers who re-emerged last year with "Foundations of Burden," the much-praised follow-up to their debut, "Sorrow and Extinction." Their approach to metal is almost vintage in its invocation of Black Sabbath and open space, and in their reliance on vocals that lean toward tonal melody rather than visceral, horror-villain cadences. Also, like other metal bands have done for south Louisiana, Florida or the Pacific Northwest (to say nothing of rural Norway), Pallbearer add a distinct element to the artistic vocabulary and iconography of Arkansas, especially as it's viewed by outsiders. They make Little Rock seem mysterious and forbidding and evocative, and we owe them for that. Saturday night they'll be at Revolution with Beneath Oblivion, Sumokem and Apothecary. LITTLE ROCK (AP) 鈥?An effort to prevent Arkansas government from infringing on someone's religious beliefs was revived Tuesday, with a state Senate panel advancing a bill that critics have called a thinly veiled endorsement of discrimination against gays and lesbians. The legislation approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee would ban state and local government from taking action that would burden someone's religious beliefs unless a "compelling governmental interest" is proven. The bill, if enacted, would strengthen any case of a person suing the government if that person could prove their religious beliefs were infringed upon. The Senate could take up the bill as soon as Wednesday. The lawmaker behind the proposal said he didn't view the measure as anti-gay, and said it was aimed at giving Arkansans more protections for their religious beliefs and practices."It's pro-religion, the ability for someone to carry out their beliefs without the state bugging them about it," Republican Rep. Bob Ballinger of Hindsville told the panel. "That's what this is."The legislation is patterned after the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 19 states have similar laws and several states are currently considering them. The same measure stalled before the panel last month on a 3-3 vote after retail giant Wal-Mart said the proposal sent the wrong message about its home state and Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson said he had reservations about the bill. The panel advanced the measure Tuesday on a 5-3 vote, with Democratic Sen. David Burnett joining the committee's four Republicans in support."This is a shameful outcome for a shameful bill," Kendra Johnson, the state director of the Human Rights Campaign, said in a statement. "The fight now turns to the full Senate, where all fair-minded Arkansans must stand together to halt this destructive legislation that undermines the core values of this state."Democratic Sen. Linda Chesterfield of Little Rock, who voted against the measure, called it "terrible.""There is something very, very wrong when you allow religion to be the excuse for discrimination," Chesterfield said after the vote. "That is exactly what we've allowed here to happen."The bill is another setback for gay rights groups, a month after Hutchinson allowed separate legislation to become law that bans local governments from expanding anti-discrimination protections to include sexual orientation or gender identity.Hutchinson had expressed concerns about that bill infringing on local control, but allowed it to become law without his signature - a move governors have used to express displeasure with legislation without prompting a veto fight with lawmakers. It takes a simple majority to override a governor's veto in Arkansas. The governor has stopped short of saying whether he'd sign the "conscience protection" measure if it reaches his desk. On Tuesday he said he supported changes made aimed at addressing his concerns about unintended consequences."I will continue to monitor any additional changes and how this proceeds through the legislative process," he said in a statement released by his office. http://www.hollisterclothing.name/ - hollister co TIP OF THE WEEKSpring is upon us, and if you have seasonal allergies, you may be less excited about that than most. After all, what fun is finally freeing your face from that scarf if you锟絩e just going to bury it in a tissue? 锟絋he key to surviving spring allergies is knowing what triggers your symptoms,锟?said allergist James Sublett, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Here are tips from ACAAI to help you find relief and enjoy spring.1. The feel of cotton: For allergy suffers, not all clothing materials are created equal. Research shows that when synthetic fabrics rub against one another, they create an electrical charge that attracts pollen, which, as it turns out, is also electrically charged. 2. Adjust your workout routine: After months indoors, you can锟絫 wait to exercise outside. However, exercising causes you to breathe more deeply and inhale the pollen that affects your allergy symptoms. Exercise outdoors when pollen counts are at their lowest - before dawn and in the late afternoon or early evening.3. Garden smart: Think your spring allergies are going to force you to quit gardening? Think again. Taking an antihistamine about half an hour before you head outside will help. Avoid touching your eyes, and be sure to wash your hands, hair and clothing once you go back indoors.4. Take something a little stronger: Over-the-counter options can be beneficial for those suffering from mild allergies. However, people suffering from more severe allergies will benefit from seeing an allergist. 锟紸n allergist will help you develop an action plan with ways to avoid allergy triggers and determine what treatment is best for your individual needs,锟?says Dr. Sublett. Many severe allergy sufferers find relief in immunotherapy.5. Eliminate uninvited guests: You can make your spring allergies more bearable by limiting your exposure to indoor allergens. Vacuum your furniture, leave your shoes by the door, shower frequently, cover your floors with washable throw rugs and use a dehumidifier to limit your mold exposure. 锟?BrandpointCHILDREN锟絊 HEALTHKnow the signs: Reactions to ingested medications or household products may vary. Researchers at Tufts University told The Washington Post that intense strength training can be a good tool for seniors trying to stave off age-related disabilities and boost brain power. Experts say seniors interested in trying beginner workouts should consult with a trainer for tips and advice on how to modify workouts for pre-existing conditions.
